WHAT IS HAIR REGENERATION?

Hair regeneration is a method of treating androgenetic hair loss through use of Plaetlet rich plasma (PRP) that restart the stalled hair follicle growth cycle. 

WHAT TREATMENT METHOD IS USED TO REGENERATE HAIR GROWTH?

At Omani Beauty and Wellness, we use platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) + BioD amniotic/placenta Extracellular Matrix or micromatrix  (both are extracellular matrix) to inject the scalp where there are dormant follicles.  Platelet-rich- plasma contains multiple growth factors which kick start the growth of stalled hair follicles.  It is obtained by drawing blood from the patient’s arm.  The red cells are separated from the plasma by centrifugation.  The platelet-rich portion of the plasma is separated and injected into the scalp along with extracellular (ECM).

 Micromatrix is an extracellular matrix derived from porcine bladder. BioD amniotic/placenta is an extracellular matrix derived from human amniotic placental membrane.  ECM has been used in the field of orthopedics and cosmetic surgery for years.  It serves as a scaffolding upon to which to build the growth of the dormant hair follicles.  Extracellular matrix transforms dormant adult stem cells into active cells that cause healing and reproduces tissue cell like the ones into which it is injected.  The combination of these products stops the hair loss and improves the caliber, length and coverage of the hair.  

Vitamin D has also been shown, through studies, to assist hair regrowth. (Ref. below)

WHO QUALIFIES FOR PRP + ECM TREATMENT?

Androgenetic hair loss is best treated with PPR and ECM in both men and women.  It is a combination of genetics and hormones.   It may stem from either side of the family.  In men, androgenic hair loss manifests as a receding hair line and thinning of the crown.  If unchecked, the condition progresses over time to baldness.  The follicles shrink and miniaturize the hair.  Finally, the follicle does not grow at all and disappears.  There must be follicles remaining before PRP + ECM can work.

In women, androgenetic hair loss occurs just as frequent as it does in men.  Women usually present with generalized thinning all over the scalp.   It may be related to the actions of androgen hormones related to ovarian cysts, birth control pills with high levels of androgens, pregnancy or menopause.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?

With PRP + ECM hair loss stops about 2 months after treatment and thickening of the follicles begins.  Hair growth in the length and caliber of the strands are noted around 4-6 months.  The full effect of the injections Is noted at about one year. Usually only one injection is required in most patients.  A second injection may be given, if necessary, after one year.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

There is no reaction to the patient’s own PRP which is from their own blood.  However, there may be bruising, mild pain or irritation at injection site.   Micromatrix is derived from porcine bladder.  For those who are allergic to pork or have religious objections to use of porcine bladder, BioD amniotic/placenta ECM can be used.  Usually local anesthetic is applied to the balding area or a nerve block is used for large areas.  There may be little discomfort from this procedure, but once anesthesia is established the actual PRP + ECM injections are not painful.
